In 1979 Kay spent two weeks with Secretariat to do a painting of him to be featured in a new major book, The Great American Sports Book, for the Hall of Fame Press.

She was able to get to know him intimately, sitting on the hay in a corner of his stall sketching him in watercolor by way of getting to know his personality. As a host  he was quite comical, dropping hay on her sometimes and nuzzling her paint tray out of her reach, finally eating her strawhat --later he seemed to realize he had lost  his game of knocking it off her head every day.

And when time for him to pose, he was all professional. At his groom's command, it  was head up, ears pointed forward, his three white stockinged legs placed just right to be seen by the guest which he expected to be a photographer. Quickly puzzled that no light bulbs were popping, he would break his pose to look around at me to see why I was loafing along with a brush and paints.
